Poll on the Front Page

Postby Jordan on Sat Feb 21, 2009 3:37 am

If you go to the front page today, you'll see that there's a poll up. For a few people, this isn't really big news, because it's been there for a couple of weeks already.

The problem is that in haste, I forgot to see how it would look in lower resolutions and with non-widescreen monitors. Whoops! So, supposedly many people have been unable to vote on the poll because it was hidden behind the news. That's been fixed. Now everybody should be able to see the poll properly, as it now shares the main frame with the news.

The poll is now officially closed and the results are in.

First, a little backstory:

Starting in a couple months, I'll start writing articles on how to write a campaign setting. Most of this stuff is pretty basic, non-specific information, so it can be used equally well among systems. The poll was to determine what style the example campaign setting will take.

The winner is: Dying Earth.

Dying Earth is an interesting genre, and one of my favorites. In fact, a lot of D&D's basic rules for magic (at least up until 4th Edition) were based on works from Jack Vance's Tales of the Dying Earth books. You can thank Mr. Vance for innovations like the 'cast & forget' system of magic, Ioun stones, and spells like Color Spray and Evards Black Tentacles.

The example campaign is tentatively called Ember, and is set in a world where a magical disaster some centuries past started the world into a slow downspiral. The Plane of Shadow is slowly becoming coterminous with the Material Plane and oppressive and absolute darkness creeps ever closer to the last remnants of society. The setting itself is the last remaining area, the Penumbra, and is the last place in the world where people can live. The population is slowly dwindling due to apathy and malaise, and the only ones who could possibly reverse the disaster or save the world died generations before. Ember is a bleak place, but small consolation can be gained by knowing that the world likely won't be swallowed for at least a few more generations.

Look for "How to Build a Campaign Setting" and Ember coming soon (actually just as soon as Zen and the Art of Character Creation is completed).
